Bad Breath Causes — Your Tongue

One part of any bad breath solution has to be dealing with your tongue. The tongue is a one of the main offenders in the bad breath saga. Do you brush your tongue? WHAT! You forgot!!??

I suppose you do one of those 20 to 30 second tooth brushing jobs too. The tongue is a great place for all those nasty bacteria - remember then - they are what causes bad breath in most cases. These are what are known as anaerobic bacteria since they don't require oxygen. One of their main hangouts is in the back of your mouth. They love a nice yucky film on the tongue.

So one thing you've got to do is brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth and do a good job of it. I'll bet you didn't know that those old time Romans brushed their tongues every day (well, some of them did anyway and they were supposed just like you are). It's a pretty old oral hygiene practice, but it seems to be forgotten from time to time.

You can brush or you can use a tongue cleaner/scraper - but be careful you don't want to damage your tongue. If you brush, always use a soft bristle brush and use it gently. You don't want to gag yourself but you do want to get as far back in your mouth as you possibly can to eliminate the buildup. Most of the bad breath produced in the mouth comes from the area toward the back of the tongue.
